Job Summary:

Responsible for leading the execution of Data Science activities to include processing, cleaning, and analyzing large volumes of data to assist with addressing business line problems or the completion of research initiatives. Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, programming, and/or data modeling to discover information, recognize patterns and trends, and address business or research questions through data visualization. Supports technology initiatives managed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, including projects delegated from the U.S. Treasury. Unique opportunity to work with federal financial data and tell compelling stories that helps increase the transparency of the federal government and better inform the public.

Key Activities:

  • Identifies opportunities and makes valuable discoveries leading to product, process, and operational development/improvement:
  • Collaborates with stakeholders, cross-functional teams, end users, etc. to pose business questions and identify issues for data analysis and experiments. 
  • Creates data mining architectures/models/protocols, statistical reporting, and data analysis methodologies to identify trends in large data sets.
  • Uses a flexible, analytical approach to design, develop, program, and evaluate methods, predictive models, algorithms, processes, and systems to consolidate, cleanse, optimize extraction of, and analyze information from diverse sources. 
  • Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics to generate and test hypotheses, and analyze and interpret the results of experiments. Recognizes patterns; interprets meaningful, actionable insights; and develops innovative solutions.
  • Communicates findings from experiments and analysis to stakeholders.
  • Researches emerging data science principles, theories, and techniques for application to the business. 
  • At higher career levels, may conduct scientific research projects with the goal of breaking new ground in data analytics.



• Bachelor’s degree in a Data Science related field (Master’s preferred) and two years of related experience. 
• Broad and growing competency in technical skills related to computing (operating systems, databases, networking, high performance computing, and related).  
• Competent in at least one programming language common in data science (R, Python, SQL, etc.), and demonstrated experienced with common BI tools such as Tableau.   
•  Developing leadership and management skills.  
•  Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.  Experience in storytelling using data required.
•  Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to work effectively in an inclusive team environment.
•  Understanding of Agile and Scrum principles desired. 

United States citizenship or lawful permanent resident alien status with at least three or more years of United States residency from the date of legal entry to the United States is required for this position.

This position has additional screening requirements due to the information accessed while performing the job. These additional screenings would be initiated at the time of offer acceptance and can take up to a couple of months to be completed. You can begin work before the screening is completed; however, continued employment is contingent on acceptable screening results. The areas screened may include education/employment verification, criminal history, credit history, and reference checks.
