The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia is one of the 12 regional Reserve Banks that, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., make up the Federal Reserve System. It helps formulate and implement monetary policy, supervises banks and bank and savings and loan holding companies, and provides financial services to depository institutions and the federal government. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia serves eastern and central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware.


The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia is seeking a graduate level or Ph.D. student for a summer internship in the RADAR Supervisory Modeling Teams business line.   The last global financial crisis brought into forefront concerns about poor governance having been an important contributor to the housing market turmoil and risk-taking behavior of banks and loose mortgage underwriting standards.  Using several different measures of bank corporate governance and detailed loan-level information or mortgages, the intern's project will investigate how bank corporate governance affected mortgage lending and performance outcomes before and after the crisis.  The project will test competing hypotheses for relations between different proxies of governance and mortgage credit/outcomes.  It will also investigate heterogeneous effects across different markets, lenders and consumers.


To contribute to the research project, the intern will primarily work with the HMDA, McDash and CRISM datasets in RADAR but also use some public datasets like the bank Call Reports or Bureau of Labor Statistics.  He/she will download data and construct the dataset for a research project in SAS as well as run various regressions in STATA and prepare tables for the research project.


Required Skills:


  • SAS and/or STATA software knowledge and basic econometrics knowledge
