Job Summary:

The Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Information Officer (PIO) facilitates communication with members of the media, government officials, and the public at large for the Boston Fed. In this role, he or she provides the Bank’s president and senior leadership team with strategic communications counsel related to reputation and issues management. 

The PIO also oversees the Corporate Communications department, and is responsible for evolving and executing the Bank’s communications strategy within the Bank and outside – thoughtfully engaging with a variety of audiences through media relations, government affairs, social media, digital strategy, design, and user experience – in order to ensure the Bank’s research, policy perspectives, and initiatives have a broad reach in the New England region and beyond. 

Principal Accountabilities:

1. Provide strategic communications counsel on a range of topics to Bank’s President and senior management, as well as other Bank experts.

2. Play a strategic role in the selection and coordination of the Bank president’s public engagements and policy speeches, including speech development and dissemination, ensuring maximum reach.

3. Develop collaborative relationships within and outside the Bank to foster good communication within and about the organization.

4. Direct the communications team’s media relations activities, ensuring appropriate and timely engagement with print, digital, and broadcast local and national media.

5. Direct the Bank’s government relations strategies for congressional relations – as well as state and local outreach – often in close coordination with other Reserve Banks or the Board of Governors.

6. Direct the department’s content strategy for internal and external channels, overseeing the development of key messages and storytelling opportunities for Bank and external audiences. Develop goals and performance measures for these communications efforts, leveraging data in order to provide ongoing strategic recommendations business areas and Bank leadership.

7. Direct the Bank’s digital communications channels, including the Bank’s websites, email campaigns, and its social media presence, ensuring accessibility of information, cutting-edge design and experience, and consistent deployment of key messages. Champion the use of emerging communications technologies, tools, and tactics throughout the organization to maximize efficiency and use of resources.

8. Represent the Bank as a member of the Federal Reserve System’s Public Information Subcommittee.

This position is required to directly and/ or indirectly supervise others.

Knowledge and Experience:

• Knowledge and experience normally acquired through, or equivalent to, the completion of a Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) and a minimum of 15 years of job related experience – including at least 10 years of management experience. 

• Direct experience or working knowledge of economics, research methods, financial markets, financial stability, supervisory policy, payments and financial services, community economic development, and payments technologies/cyber security and the miscellaneous array of central bank evolving duties and tasks. 

• Demonstrated ability developing and implementing holistic communications strategies that leverage the evolving digital communications landscape and latest industry trends.

• Established media and public/private sector contacts across a variety of industries throughout New England as well as relationships and direct experience dealing with elected officials and related support staff.  

• Demonstrated experience capturing third-party, national media coverage reflective of an organization’s strategic priorities and initiatives.

• Deep knowledge and demonstrated experience with various layers of government and third party stakeholders, including demonstrated understanding of state and national legislative processes. Must be comfortable managing a variety of external stakeholder relationships, maintaining a regular cadence of information-sharing with public offices and other key constituencies across New England.

• Demonstrated experience with leading, current and emerging technologies (e.g., web-based, mobile, social media, analytic tools) to meet business objectives and user expectations. 

• Must be comfortable leading an interdisciplinary team of communications professionals. Possess strong interpersonal skills and proven record of working collaboratively with a wide range of constituents. Ability to collaborate with, engage, and amplify the contributions of many diverse parties and experts.

• Experience navigating rapidly changing and sensitive situations with a sense of urgency, agility, tact, and nimbleness and when appropriate, asking hard questions. Must be comfortable with ambiguity.
• Position requires approximately 20% travel.
